Description
Sylvia Pankhurst was a British suffragette, socialist, and internationalist who distinguished herself from her mother Emmeline and sister Christabel by fighting for working-class women’s rights and linking the campaign for women’s suffrage to the broader struggle for social and economic equality. While other suffragettes courted middle-class support, she worked in the East End of London, establishing nurseries, cost-price restaurants, and clinics for impoverished women during World War I. Later in life she became a passionate opponent of fascism and a champion of Ethiopian independence, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to justice that extended far beyond any single cause.
