Description
Alan Turing was one of the most brilliant and tragically treated minds of the 20th century — a mathematician who created the theoretical framework for modern computing with his 1936 concept of the universal machine and personally helped shorten World War II by cracking Nazi Germany’s Enigma cipher at Bletchley Park. His 1950 paper ‘Computing Machinery and Intelligence’ proposed the famous Turing Test as a measure of machine intelligence, establishing the philosophical and scientific basis for artificial intelligence as a field. Turing was prosecuted by the British government for homosexuality in 1952 and subjected to chemical castration; he was granted a royal pardon in 2013, long after his death in 1954, in belated recognition of one of history’s greatest injustices.
