Description
Emmeline Pankhurst was the founder of the Women’s Social and Political Union and the driving force behind Britain’s suffragette movement, which fought militantly for women’s right to vote in the early 20th century. Her motto ‘Deeds Not Words’ encapsulated her belief that peaceful protest alone would not bring change, leading her and her followers to accept imprisonment and hunger strikes in pursuit of justice. Her campaign culminated in the Representation of the People Act 1918, which granted voting rights to British women over 30 — a watershed moment in democratic history.
