Description
Malcolm X was an African American Muslim minister and human rights activist who became one of the most influential and polarizing figures of the civil rights era, advocating forcefully for Black pride, self-reliance, and the right to self-defense in contrast to the nonviolent approach championed by Martin Luther King Jr. Born Malcolm Little, he transformed himself during a prison sentence through reading and his conversion to Islam, emerging as the national spokesman for the Nation of Islam and a symbol of uncompromising resistance to white supremacy. His later pilgrimage to Mecca — which led him to reject separatism in favor of a broader vision of human brotherhood — preceded his assassination in February 1965, cutting short one of the most extraordinary political and spiritual journeys in American history.
