Vera Atkins was a Romanian-born British intelligence officer who served as the de facto head of operations for the French section of the Special Operations Executive during World War II, personally recruiting, training, and dispatching over 400 agents — including 39 women — into Nazi-occupied France to support the French Resistance. After the war she spent years traveling through Europe, interrogating former SS officers and tracking down the fates of the agents who had disappeared, many of whom had been executed in concentration camps, refusing to let their sacrifices go unacknowledged. Her story, long kept secret by the British government, has gradually been recognized as one of the most extraordinary examples of dedication, courage, and moral responsibility in the history of British intelligence.
