Description
Rita Levi-Montalcini was an Italian neurologist who, working under clandestine conditions during World War II while hiding from Nazi persecution as a Jewish scientist, conducted the groundbreaking research that led to her discovery of nerve growth factor — a finding that transformed our understanding of how the nervous system develops and earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986. She continued her scientific work actively well into her 100s, becoming the oldest living Nobel laureate before her death in 2012 at age 103. A senator-for-life in Italy, she was also a passionate advocate for science education and women’s rights in science and society.
