Description
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter whose deeply autobiographical work drew on indigenous Mexican culture, personal pain, and vivid surrealist imagery to create some of the most compelling art of the 20th century. Enduring lifelong physical suffering following a near-fatal bus accident at age 18, she channeled her experience of pain, identity, and womanhood into over 140 paintings, of which 55 were self-portraits. Long after her death in 1954, she has become a global cultural icon celebrated for her fierce individuality, feminist spirit, and unapologetic self-expression.
