Description
Benazir Bhutto was a towering figure in world politics, a Harvard and Oxford-educated Pakistani leader who became the first woman ever to head a democratic government in a Muslim-majority country when she was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1988, a position she held twice. Daughter of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, she championed democracy, women’s rights, and civilian rule through years of exile, imprisonment, and relentless opposition from Pakistan’s military establishment. She was assassinated on December 27, 2007, just months after returning to Pakistan to lead the opposition ahead of elections, leaving behind an enduring legacy as a symbol of courage against authoritarianism.
