The New River Gorge, recently designated as a national park, shelters one of the oldest rivers on Earth winding through a dramatic 1,000-foot-deep gorge, offering some of the most challenging whitewater rafting and technical rock climbing on the East Coast. Despite its modest size, West Virginia contains remarkable biological diversity in the Monongahela National Forest, including the Dolly Sods Wilderness, a high-altitude plateau that more closely resembles the Canadian boreal forest than the surrounding Appalachian landscape.
