Description
Ray Charles was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who pioneered the development of soul music by blending gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz, country, and pop into a sound so singular that he earned the title the Genius from Frank Sinatra himself. Blind from age four following a case of glaucoma, he developed a musical ear and piano technique of extraordinary sensitivity, producing landmark recordings including What’d I Say, Georgia on My Mind, and Hit the Road Jack that became cornerstones of American popular music. His 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music was a crossover triumph that demonstrated his limitless musical range and helped break down racial barriers in the music industry.
